What is the Danger Zone ?

Every Christian lives in a battle.  To be a Christian leader, however, is to live on the front lines with a target across your chest.  As a leader you know the irony woven into the fabric of ministry.  You serve and love others for the sake of the gospel, but often at the expense of your own heart, marriage, and family.   This is not the way it was meant to be.

There is a way to do life and ministry differently.

Take a few minutes and review the descriptions below.  Can you relate to any of the following experiences?  If so, it's possible that you are a leader living in the danger zone.

  • Intimacy with God is a thing of the past or--or never existed--and time in solitude and prayer is limited to "professional" prayers and preparation for your next ministry activity.

  •  Intimacy with your spouse is a thing of the past--or never existed--and you don't know what to do about it.

  • You find yourself pouring into everyone else, but no one is pouring into you.

  • Or maybe someone is pouring into you, but that relationship somehow feels out of bounds or out of balance.

  • Unaddressed issues from past conflict have caused resentment or a change in the way you relate.

  • Your sense of emotional well-being and identity are linked to the ongoing success of the ministry.

  • Your spouse tells you that she will no longer tolerate your mistress--whose name is "ministry."

  • Your friendships and close relationships are limited to people you are ministering to.

  • Unwanted thoughts, behaviors, or addictions keep you locked in unwanted patterns of living.

  • Sexual struggles and temptations keep you hidden in shame, isolation, and fear of being found out.

  • Or maybe you have been found out and for a variety of reasons you feel disqualified to lead or offer what is in your heart.

  • The calling that once brought you joy and energy now brings resentment and exhaustion.

  • You regularly spend time thinking about getting out of the ministry.

  • Or maybe your soul is just weary and needing rest, renewal, or direction.
